The Diastrous management

Day before there was a fire at a trade fair in Meerut. Over 120 died – 50 charred to death rest charred after death.

The message is clear, there were more casualties were in a stampede than in fire.

While the fire safety standards remain questionable the bigger question of disaster management remains unanswered.

No one is questioning the complete absence of a sense of preparedness – at a non-official level!

Not one school in entire nation teaches basic fire drills. No one teaches kids that it’s the smoke and not the fir which is a killer. Hardly anyone of us has ever used a fire extinguisher.

And then why to talk of fire alone – people die in earthquakes ‘cause they don’t know how to react in those 10 valuable seconds, people are drowned ‘cause swimming is still an indulgence for most of urban India.

We waste class room lectures on SUPW – socially useless productive work – we never teach our kids what to do or what not to do.

Deaths in Meerut are a grim reminder that we as a society will walk over others to protect ourselves.

They are a reminder that we are not yet civilized.  The souls that perished that day were killed by their fellow audience. May they rest in peace.
