Pakistan is in turnmoil - the Judiciary is under attack and press besieged. I don't know what Mr Pervez Musharraf had in his mind while doing what he did, but the net result is that he has alienated the increasingly affluent middle class of his country.
While there are rumours that he may acquire dictatorial powers and impoes emergency - he support from Washington DC has moved to grey from white.
The fact that all is not well in Millitary establishment of Pakistan with some elements of it supporting Taliban and plotting coup against their own C-n-C there is a major division in
Pakistan sole pan-national entity.
We Indians sitting across the border at a loss either way; if Musharraf falls then with him we loose all promises of peace in kashmir. A solution to Kashmir issue is expected wintin 18 months with Pakistani Prime Minister going on record saying "Stage has come for dispute resolution with India" ; the timing of these opressions cannot be any more stupid.
Some of Musharraf's achievements are significant. Relations with India have improved, the Kashmir insurgency supported by Pakistan has been scaled back, a women's protection Bill was passed in the teeth of Islamic opposition, and a virulent public school curriculum that emphasised jehad and martyrdom has been toned down.
Despite more than 700 Pakistani combat deaths, many in Musharraf's army wish to retain the Taliban as quasi-allies who, when the Americans leave Afghanistan someday, will give Pakistan the strategic depth it needs against India. The idea is to aliviate fears of India attacking Pakistan.
May be in this hour India should throw up an incentive of Non Aggretion pact - Brokered by US - acceptable to Pkaistani Army - and packaged to help General regain his mass appeal...
The time has cone and India should make a choice...
